Si è conclusa l’avventura sulle Alpi del progetto AlpCross, iniziativa che fa parte del GORE-TEX® Experience Tour 2012, che dal 25 al 29 agosto scorsi ha visto impegnati in un’emozionante attraversata delle Alpi otto appassionati di outdoor, accompagnati da Hans Kammerlander, leggenda dell’alpinismo, Bernd Ritschel fotografo professionista, Yann Delevaux guida alpina e Karl Gabl, esperto di montagna.

“È così difficile trovare oggi le parole per descrivere questa esperienza…”.
Sono le parole di Erica, che insieme a Lorenzo, Yacine, Marine, Natalia, François, Tiziana e Philipp ha condiviso un viaggio durato sei lunghi e intensi giorni, iniziato lo scorso 25 agosto dall’Ötztal in Austria e concluso il 30 agosto in Val Senales in Italia attraverso un percorso di circa 75 km con un dislivello di 7.000 metri complessivi.

Una settimana che ha rappresentato un’esperienza di condivisione di sensazioni, di fatica e di emozioni allo stato puro, davanti a scenari che tra lo stupore e la meraviglia sono rimasti impressi in modo indelebile nella mente del gruppo, un’atmosfera che si può ancora “respirare” nei brevi diari di viaggio che riportiamo qui sotto: il report integrale – in 3 lingue – redatto dal fotografo Bernd Ritschel, e soprattutto l’estratto dal diario di Erica Facchini, uno dei due partecipanti italiani.

Gli otto partecipanti sono stati selezionati grazie al progetto internazionale, condotto con i media partner National Geographic per Italia e Francia, Mountainblog per il web, e con 4Season, la rivista del network Globetrotter, per Germania, Svizzera e Austria, promosso e diffuso attraverso la piattaforma web centrale GORE-TEX® Experience Tour comprensiva della pagina Facebook dedicata.
Il programma ha toccato alcuni tra i rifugi alpini più spettacolari, tra i quali il Rüsselsheimer e il Similaun. Il gruppo ha scalato il Wildspitze, la montagna più alta del Tirolo (3.772 mt), e ha attraversato i ghiacciai Taschach e Niederjoch, dove è stato trovato Ötzi, l’uomo venuto dal ghiaccio.

Le condizioni climatiche dei sei giorni di escursione sono state il banco di prova dell’equipaggiamento fornito, giacche e zaini Millet per tutti i team e calzature AKU (team Italia), Scarpa (team internazionale), Lowa (team Germania) e Millet (team Francia), prodotti altamente tecnologici in membrana GORE-TEX®, impermeabile e traspirante, per una mission impegnativa e avvincente portata a termine grazie ad una complicità straordinaria venutasi a creare tra appassionati ed esperti.

Dal diario di Erica Facchini: 31.08.2012 h. 15:30 sul treno verso Modena…

La pioggia batte sul finestrino. L’Italia sfreccia davanti ai miei occhi che non riescono a fissarsi su nulla. Vedo lontano, circondata da momenti e paesaggi…
È così difficile trovare oggi le parole per descrivere quest’esperienza.
La mente è un turbinio caotico di idee, ricordi, pensieri, emozioni, desideri… È una sequenza di immagini che si alternano troppo velocemente per comprendere quel dettaglio, quel brivido, quel sussulto che ognuna di esse mi provoca.
È ancora tutto troppo fresco, tutto troppo caldo… C’è solo un velo di tristezza, quel senso di vuoto che quasi inconsapevolmente aumenta un po’ man mano che il ritorno diventa più concreto, man mano che la vita reale torna a chiamarti prepotentemente a sè… Ma questo serve a riprenderci, a fare spazio dentro di noi, a darci il tempo di  ripensare, digerire, ripercorrere lentamente i dettagli. Ogni giornata. Ogni passo. Ogni sorriso. E pian piano far scendere quel nodo alla gola che ogni addio lascia dietro di sè, come una sfumatura…
Esattamente una settimana fa, mentre cercavo di capire chi fosse Lorenzo tra tutte le persone sul binario, pensavo che probabilmente il nostro viaggio sarebbe stato un po’ così… Sarebbe stato un continuo cercare di capire la persona che, affianco a te, condivideva fatiche ed emozioni; cercare di capire i suoi pensieri, i suoi sentimenti, le sue impressioni, le sue paure… Pensavo che sarebbe stato un viaggio di ricerca e di contatto, di “studio” del vicino.
E invece ora ci rivedo intorno al tavolo di legno nell’atmosfera calda del rifugio. Ci rivedo aspettando l’alba sul Similaun o faticando tra la nebbia del sentiero. Ci rivedo con riflessa negli occhi l’emozione del Wildspitze o nella complicità dello sforzo. Ci rivedo persi nelle risate, in una battuta o in un’idea. Ci rivedo insieme… Ma insieme con la mente, con il cuore. Siamo un gruppo e nonostante non sappiamo nulla l’uno dell’altro siamo riusciti a creare legami, armonia… Siamo riusciti a creare, uniti, la nostra esperienza, il nostro Alpcross… Ed è stato bellissimo.
Mi risveglio.
L’uomo sul sedile di fronte mi guarda incuriosito. Forse si sta chiedendo cos’ha da scrivere in modo tanto forsennato una ragazza dall’aria stravolta con due enormi zaini tra i piedi…
Sorrido.
Ricordi, emozioni… Ecco cos’ho da scrivere… La mia vita, la mia parte di Alpi, il mio cuore e la mia mente.
Mi reimmergo nel foglio.
Voglio fissare il momento in cui la notte ha dato la mano al sole quella mattina avvolta dalla nebbia rossa sotto il monumento ad Otzi. Voglio fissare l’abbraccio del mio sguardo sul mondo intero della cima del Wildspitze. Voglio fissare la difficoltà della prima volta su un ghiacciaio e la soddisfazione di farcela; le nostre risate sotto l’ombra colorata delle preghiere tibetane. Voglio fissare tutte le informazioni recepite; l’orgoglio di camminare affianco ad Hans e la libertà di ridere, sempre con un po’ di timore, delle stranezze di questo eroe. Voglio fissare le parole esperte di Karl e Yann; l’espressione paziente e pacata di Bernd…
Voglio fissare ogni passo, ogni saluto, ogni risata di questo viaggio così strano quanto incredibilmente forte… Perché solo così, forse, Lunedì alle dieci, durante il nostro minuto di sorriso programmato, riuscirò a rivivere fino in fondo tutte le magie di questo percorso e potrò finalmente pensare, pienamente, che esperienza meravigliosa!

Ritrovo alle 11.00 in Ötztal. Hans Kammerlander, Patrick Hediger ed io, Bernd Ritschel, salutiamo il gruppo che affronterà questo Gore AlpCross. I partecipanti ci danno l’impressione di essere preparati e motivati. Il meteo è variabile e a tratti piove, ma ciononostante arriviamo senza problemi al rifugio presso l’Hauersee. Striscie di nebbia rimangono appese alle montagne. Ogni tanto appare il sole.
Ci godiamo questo piccolo rifugio pensando già con piacere alla tappa di domani, che ci condurrà al rifugio Russelheimer. L’atmosfera nel gruppo è ottima.

11 Uhr vormittags im Ötztal. Hans Kammerlander, Patrick Hediger und ich, Bernd Ritschel, begrüßen die Gruppe für die Gore AlpCross. Die Teilnehmer machen einen sehr engagierten und gut vorbereiteten Eindruck. Wir packen die Rucksäcke und dann geht es los. Das Wetter ist zwar wechselhaft und zum Teil regnerisch, aber trotzdem gelangen wir gut hinauf zur Hütte am Hauersee. Nebelschwaden ziehen über die Grate. Ab und zu schaut die Sonne ein bißchen durch.
Wir machen es uns gemütlich auf dieser kleinen, wunderschön gelegenen Hütte am Hauersee und freuen uns auf die morgige Etappe, die uns zur Rüsselsheimer Hütte weiterführen wird. Die Stimmung in der Gruppe ist super.

At 11 a.m. in the Ötztal valley, Hans Kammerlander, Patrick Hediger and I, Bernd Ritschel, welcomed the group for the Gore AlpCross. Our first impression was that the participants were very keen and very well prepared. After packing our rucksacks we set off. Although the weather was changeable and even rainy, we easily managed to reach the Hauersee hut. Mist hung low over the mountain ridges, but now and then the sun came through briefly.
We have now made ourselves comfortable in this small, but wonderfully located hut on the edge of the Hauersee lake and we are looking forward to tomorrow’s stage, which will take us on to the Rüsselsheimer hut. The mood in the group is super.

Si conclude una giornata meravigliosa. Quasi otto ore di cammino dal rifugio Hauersee al rifugio Rüsselsheimer. Nononstante un meteo non certo ottimo – nuvoloso, nebbioso, e parzialmente piovoso – l’ambiente lungo l’intero percorso, lo scenario e l’atmosfera del gruppo sono stati eccezionali. Per un paio di partecipanti la tappa è stata molto, molto impegnativa. Abbiamo camminato per ore e ore su blocchi rocciosi, continuamente su e giù per un totale di cinque valichi. In totale abbiamo salito e disceso 1.500 metri di dislivello su terreno difficile.
Tutto dimenticato, in ogni caso, una volta giunti al rifugio Rüsselsheimer, dove abbiamo potuto goderci dolci, bevande calde e litri di succo di mela!
Qui ci abbiamo salutato Hans Kammerlander. Domani si unirà a noi la guida francese Yann Delevaux, che continuerà con noi verso la Wildspitze.
Le previsioni danno meteo buono e non vediamo l’ora di affrontare le prossime eccitanti tappe!

Ein wunderbarer Tag ist zu Ende. Fast acht Stunden waren wir unterwegs von der Hauerseehütte zur Rüsselsheimer Hütte. Das Wetter war zwar nur mäßig, d.h. bewölkt, zwischendrin ein paar Regentropfen und Nebel, aber die Landschaft, die ganze Etappe, die Szenerie, die Stimmung war wirklich großartig.
Für ein paar der Teilnehmer war die Etappe anspruchsvoll und sehr, sehr anstrengend. Es ging über Stunden durch grobes Blockwerk in einem ständigen Auf und Ab über insgesamt fünf Scharten. Alles zusammen waren es sicher über 1500 Höhenmeter, die wir in anspruchsvollem Gelände im Auf- und Abstieg zurückgelegt haben. Aber jetzt in der Rüsselsheimer Hütte ist alles vergessen. Wir genießen Kuchen, heiße Getränke und literweise Apfelschorle.
Hier oben auf dieser Hütte haben wir uns von Hans Kammerlander verabschiedet. Morgen geht es mit dem französischen Führer Yann Delevaux weiter Richtung Wildspitze.
Die Wetterprognosen sind gut, und wir freuen uns auf die nächsten großen Etappen und Tage.

A wonderful day has come to an end. We took almost eight hours to walk from the Hauersee hut to the Rüsselsheimer hut. Although the weather was not very good – cloudy, with a few drops of rain and mist – the mountains, the entire route, the scenery, the mood in the group were all magnificent.
For some of the participants the route was technically demanding and very, very strenuous. We walked for hours over block fields, continually going up and down over a total of five cols. In total we climbed and descended more than 1500 metres on difficult terrain. Once in the Rüsselsheimer hut, however, that was all forgotten as we indulged in cakes, hot drinks and litres of apple juice.
Up here in this hut we took leave from Hans Kammerlander. Tomorrow we will be joined by the French mountain guide Yann Delevaux, continuing our route towards the Wildspitze.
The weather forecast is good and we are looking forward to the exciting stages in the next few days.

Sediamo felici e contenti nell’ultimo sole della sera di fronte al rifugio Taschachhaus. Le nuvole sono finalmente scomparse durante la notte. Oggi siamo scesi dal rifugio Rüsselsheimer nella valle Pitz, sotto un cielo perfettamente limpido, e abbiamo incontrato la guida alpina Yann Delevaux. Qui è stata distribuita l’atrezzatura: ramponi, piccozze, corde e imbraghi, prima di proseguire insieme verso il rifugio Taschachhaus.
Yann e Partick ora stanno dando istruzioni al gruppo per l’utilizzo di corde e ramponi sul ghiaccio.
Prevediamo che il tempo sarà perfetto anche domani e confidiamo in una lunga meravigliosa giornata verso la cima della Wildspitze, la più alta montagna del Tirolo!

Wir sitzen glücklich und zufrieden in der Abendsonne vor dem Taschachhaus. Über Nacht hat es endlich aufgerissen. Wir sind bei total klarem Himmel von der Rüsselsheimer Hütte abgestiegen ins Pitztal und haben dort den französischen Bergführer Yann Delevaux getroffen. Hier haben wir auch die Ausrüstung verteilt: Steigeisen, Pickel, Seile und Gurte, bevor wir dann gemeinsam zum Taschachhaus aufgestiegen sind.
Yann und Patrick geben jetzt der Gruppe erste Anweisungen und machen praktische Übungen im Gehen mit Steigeisen und in die Seiltechnik auf dem Gletscher.
Wir gehen davon aus, dass auch morgen das Wetter perfekt ist, und wir freuen uns alle auf einen schönen, langen Tag, um die Wildspitze, den höchsten Gipfel im Tirol, zu besteigen.

We are now sitting happy and content in the evening sun in front of the Taschachhaus hut. Overnight the clouds have finally disappeared. We descended from the Rüsselsheimer hut down into the Pitz valley under a perfectly clear sky and met the French mountain guide Yann Delevaux. Here we also distributed the equipment: crampons, ice axes, ropes and harnesses, before wallking up together to the Taschachhaus hut.
Yann and Patrick are now giving the group initial instructions and practical training in the use of crampons and ropes on glaciers.
We assume that the weather will be perfect once again tomorrow and we are all looking forward to a wonderful, long day to summit the Wildspitze, the highest mountain in Tyrol.

Il giorno più lungo dell’AlpCross è passato. La sveglia è suonata appena prima delle 4 di mattina. Poco dopo ci trovavamo già con le lampade frontali sulle morene verso il ghiacciaio del Taschach. Qui ci siamo legati in tre gruppi per proseguire sul ghiacciaio, molto selvaggio e crepacciato, ma in con condizioni ottime. Inoltre il cielo era completamente limpido, con un meteo ideale per la montagna. Un’ora più tardi potevamo goderci l’alba sopra le montagne da 3.000 metri della Ötztal. Alle otto ci trovavamo immersi nel sole nel caldo, e tutto il gruppo era entusiasta di questo scenraio alpino e selvaggio.
Il resto della salita alla Wildspitze non ha presentato problemi, nonostante si siano dovuti attraversare numerosi crepacci. La cresta finale al versante sud della cima era fortunatamente priva di neve e quindi facile da scalare. In cima, il gruppo era estatsiato. Per metà di loro si è trattato della prima cima importante della loro vita, e del primo tour su di un ghiacciaio.
La discesa è stata lunga e faticosa, e, dal Mitterkar in poi, anche ripida e tecnicamente impegnativa. Dopo una lunga giornata di 11 ore di cammino abbiamo finalmente raggiunto il rifugio Rofen di ritorno nella Ötztal.

Der längste Tag des Gore AlpCross ist geschafft. Bereits um viertel vor vier klingelte der Wecker. Kurz darauf sind wir mit Stirnlampen über Moränen zum Taschachferner aufgestiegen. Ab hier ging es dann weiter in drei Seilschaften über den Gletscher. Die Verhältnisse auf diesem sehr zerrissenen und wilden Gletscher waren perfekt. Noch dazu hatten wir einen wolkenlosen Himmel und ideales Bergwetter. Eine Stunde später genossen wir den Sonnenaufgang über den 3000er der Ötztaler Alpen. Um acht Uhr kamen wir endlich in die wärmende Sonne, und alle Teilnehmer waren total begeistert von dieser hochalpinen, wilden Szenerie.
Auch der weitere Anstieg zum Gipfel der Wildspitze verlief völlig problemlos, obwohl es zwischendurch immer wieder ein paar offene Spalten gab. Der Gipfelgrat hinauf zum Südgipfel der Wildspitze war, Gott sei dank, schneefrei und daher ideal zu begehen und zu klettern. Am Gipfel selbst herrschte totale Freude und Euphorie bei den Teilnehmern. Für die Hälfte der Gruppe war es der erste große Berg in ihrem Leben und die erste Tour auf einem Gletscher überhaupt.
Der Abstieg war lang und mühsam und vom Mitterkarjoch hinunter sogar steil und sehr alpin.
Nach insgesamt 11 Stunden erreichten wir die Rofenhöfe im hintersten Ötztal.

The longest day of the Gore AlpCross is over. The alarm went off at just before four in the morning. Shortly afterwards we set off with headlamps over moraines towards the Taschach glacier. Here we formed three rope teams to continue on over the glacier. The conditions on this heavily crevassed and wild glacier were perfect. In addition we had an absolutely clear sky and ideal mountaineering weather. An hour later we were able to enjoy the sunrise over the 3000 m peaks of the Ötztal mountains. At eight o’clock we eventually came into the sun and its warmth. All of the participants were absolutely enraptured by the high alpine and wild scenery.
The rest of the climb up to the summit of the Wildspitze was unproblematic even though we had to traverse a number of open crevasses. The final ridge up to the south summit of the Wildspitze was, thank goodness, free of snow and therefore easy to climb. On the summit itself the group was totally elated and delighted. For half of the group this was the first big mountain in their life and the first tour at all on a glacier.
The descent was long and tiresome, and down from the Mitterkar very steep and alpine. After a long day with a total of 11 hours we finally reached the Rofen huts far back in the Ötz valley.

Dopo un sonno ristoratore e un’abbondante colazione nel rifugio Rofenhof presso Vent, abbiamo incontrato il meteoreologo Karl Gabl. Karl è uno dei più autorevoli specialisti di meteo in montagna e ha contribuito al successo di numerose spedizioni.
Con un meteo eccezionale abbiamo proseguito verso Vent insieme a Karl e siamo poi saliti al rifugio Martin Busch. Lungo la via Karl ci ha parlato di fenomeni metereologici, di nuvole, e di previsioni.
Dopo un lungo lunch al rifugio Martin Busch abbiamo continuato la nostra salita verso il rifugio Similaun. Sul ghiacciaio del Niederjoch Karl ci ha illustrato le relazioni tra il tempo atmosferico e il riscaldamento globale, con i relativi effetti sui ghiacciai, coinvolgendoci tutti in un ascolto attento ed entusiasta.
Il rifugio Similaun, a 3.000 metri di quota, è molto confortevole. Dopo un’eccellente cena abbiamo pianificato il giorno successivo. Le previsioni promettono tempo eccellente anche per domani, almeno al primo mattino. Prevediamo di partire presto, alle cinque, per poterci godere l’alba presso il sito di Ötzi.

Nach einer gemütlichen Nacht und einem reichhaltigen Frühstück im Rofenhof bei Vent begrüßen wir den Meteorologen Karl Gabl. Er ist einer der führenden Wetterspezialisten für Bergsteiger und hat schon vielen Expeditionen zum Erfolg geholfen. Bei bestem Wetter wandern wir mit ihm hinunter Richtung Vent, bevor wir zur Martin-Busch-Hütte aufsteigen. Immer wieder erklärt Karl Gabl Wetterphänomene, Wolken und die möglichen Prognosen daraus.
Nach einer Mittagspause in der Martin-Busch-Hütte geht es weiter Richtung Similaun-Hütte. Am Niederjochferner erklärt uns Karl die Zusammenhänge des Wetters und der Erderwärmung und die Auswirkungen auf die Gletscher. Alle sind begeistert und hören seinen Wörtern gespannt zu.
Die Similaun-Hütte, auf 3000 m gelegen, ist richtig gemütlich. Wir bekommen ein exzellentes Abendessen und planen den nächsten Tag. Der Wetterbericht verspricht für morgen Donnerstag, zumindest am frühen Morgen, noch einmal relativ gutes Wetter. Wir wollen bereits um 5 Uhr aufstehen, um einen Sonnenaufgang an der Ötzi-Fundstelle zu erleben.

After a good night’s sleep and a substantial breakfast in the Rofenhof guesthouse near Vent we welcomed the meteorologist Karl Gabl. He is one of the leading weather specialists for mountaineers and has helped many expeditions to be successful. In excellent weather we walked down towards Vent together with Karl and then hiked up to the Martin Busch hut. All along the way Karl told us about weather phenomena and clouds and the resulting weather forecasts.
After a lunch break in the Martin Busch hut we continued our ascent towards the Similaun hut. On the Niederjoch glacier Karl explained the relationships between the weather and global warming and the effects on glaciers. We were all enthralled and listened eagerly to his words.
The Similaun hut at an altitude of 3000 m is very cosy. We had an excellent evening meal and then planned the next day. The weather forecast promised relatively good weather once again for tomorrow, Thursday – at least for the early morning. We planned to get up early at five o’clock in order to experience the sunrise at the Ötzi site.

Ieri sera, dopo la nostra salita al rifugio Similaun, abbiamo studiato le previsioni del tempo: sfortunatamente, l’avvicinarsi di diversi sistemi di bassa pressione – due provenienti dal Mediterraneo e uno dall’Atlantico – porteranno pioiggia forte e tempesta nel pomeriggio di giovedì e poi per tutta la notte e l’intero giorno successivi. Perciò Patrick ed io abbiamo deciso di cambiare percorso.
Dopo una breve notte, alle cinque siamo partiti per visitare il sito di Ötzi. Sebbene fosse nuvoloso, abbiamo potuto godere di una magnifica alba. Siamo ripartiti quasi subito per proseguire lungo la lunga discesa di 1.300 metri verso la riserva di Vernagt nella valle di Schnalstal. A causa della cattiva situazione meteo, questo è stato il punto di arrivo dell’AlpCross 2012. Impensabile infatti un bivacco in queste condizioni. Nonostante ciò, tutti I partecipanti sono stati contenti e soddisfatti, e proprio grazie alla meravigliosa alba durante l’avvicinamento al sito di Ötzi, abbiamo potuto concludere questa traversata con un vero e proprio highlight.

Nach dem Aufstieg zur Similaun-Hütte haben wir am gleichen Abend die aktuellen Wetterberichte verfolgt. Leider kommen zwei Tiefdruckgebiete aus dem Mittelmeerraum und eines vom Atlantik zusammen. Sie werden am Donnerstag nachmittag und in der Nacht auf Freitag bzw. auch den ganzen Freitag sehr starke Niederschläge und Gewitter bringen. Aus diesem Grund haben Patrick und ich uns entschieden, die Route zu verändern.
Nach einer kurzen Nacht gehen wir um fünf Uhr morgens los zur Fundstelle des Ötzis. Trotz ein paar Wolken und ein wenig Nebel können wir dort oben einen wunderschönen Sonnenaufgang genießen. Nach dem Abstieg zur Similaun-Hütte folgt ein üppiges Frühstück. Es geht dann zügig weiter, es sind 1300 Hm hinunter bis zum Vernagtstausee im Schnalstal. Und aufgrund der neuen Wettersituation ist dies auch das Ende des Gore AlpCross 2012. An einem Biwak ist bei dieser Wetterprognose nicht zu denken. Aber auch so sind alle Teilnehmer glücklich und zufrieden und dank der wundersamen Sonnenaufgangstour zur Ötzi-Fundstelle endete diese Überschreitung mit einem wirklichen Highlight.

Yesterday evening after our ascent to the Similaun hut, we studied the latest weather forecasts. Unfortunately, there are several low pressure systems approaching, two from the Mediterranean and one from the Atlantic. They will bring very heavy rain and thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon, during Thursday night and the whole of Friday. Therefore, Patrick and I have decided to alter the route.
After a short night we departed at five o’clock in the morning to visit the Ötzi site. Although it was cloudy and misty, we were able to enjoy a wonderful sunrise. The descent back down to the Similaun hut was followed by a good breakfast. We soon left to continue the long, 1300 m descent down to the Vernagt reservoir in the Schnalstal valley. And due to the new weather situation, this was the end of the Gore AlpCross 2012. It was out of the question to even think of a bivouac with the current weather forecast. Even so, all of the participants were happy and satisfied, and thanks to the wonderful sunrise tour to the Ötzi site this traverse ended with a real highlight.
